Depression, and anxiety are some of the most common and yet uncomfortable emotional states that we can experience. Mostly we get through them, we work things out on our own, but at some points in our lives these feelings can become debilitating and overshadow our joy. Psychotherapy can help you to deepen your self awareness, and gain clarity on why events have thrown you off balance. At its most effective it can deepen your self compassion so that you recover motivation and perspective, and rediscover what it is that blocks your capacity for joy.
Many individuals can experience disturbing symptoms which have arisen from past traumatic events. Panic, anger, and an internal, physical feeling of dread can become your normal way of responding to others. This is what trauma leaves humans with. This is actually a normal reaction to past trauma and terror. Trauma can be a one off violent event; like a car accident or it can be something more subtle and insidious such as witnessing domestic violence as a child. Trauma is not so much defined by the event as by the impact it has on us. These events may leave you avoiding social situations, friends and family due to a deep seated worry about these feelings and how you might react towards others in public. This in turn leaves you cut off and shut down, unable to allow yourself to connect with those who care about you. You may feel consumed by flashbacks and believe yourself trapped by painful past events. This can leave you with feelings of hopelessness. Together we can consider ways to make sense of past traumatic events, and you may be able to lessen the struggles they have left you with.
